Who better to expound on the wonder of God’s presence with us than the eloquent Charles Spurgeon:
“Immanuel, God with us.”
Satan trembles at the sound of it . . .
Let him come to you suddenly,
and do you but whisper that word, “God with us,”
back he falls, confounded and confused . . .
“God with us” is the laborer’s strength.
How could he preach the gospel,
how could he bend his knees in prayer,
how could the missionary go into foreign lands,
how could the martyr stand at the stake,
how could the confessor own his Master,
how could men labor if that one word were taken away?
“God with us” is eternity’s sonnet,
heaven’s hallelujah,
the shout of the glorified,
the song of the redeemed,
the chorus of the angels,
the everlasting oratorio of the great orchestra of the sky.
-Charles Spurgeon

Oh, for words to praise you rightly, Heaven Father, for the glory of “God with us!” Thank You, Lord Jesus, for coming to earth to be our Immanuel, for gracing us with your ceaseless presence.
We stand in awe of what Immanuel means. In addition to the strength Spurgeon mentions here, you provide comfort, encouragement, peace, joy, and more.
May we never take for granted this precious reality!

I love Spurgeon. The prince of the puritans! Incidentally, at my seminary they used to tell the preacher boys that wearing a beard detracted from your preaching. Hello, Spurgeon had one! Thank you for sharing this! Merry Christmas.
You’re welcome, Dave. I never found beards detracting. Maybe it’s a generational thing. They’re much more common now than they were back in the day. Merry Christmas to you and your family also!
““God with us” is eternity’s sonnet” I love that!❤️ Thanks for sharing this, Nancy. Merry Christmas to you and yours! 💚
I’m so glad you found this meaningful, Deb. I certainly did! Spurgeon often expressed himself with such beautiful, poetic language. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
May we welcome the presence of our Immanuel not just at Christmas, but on every day of the year.
Blessings, Nancy, and Merry Christmas!
Amen, Martha. And Christmas blessings to you and your family as well!
Beautiful, Nancy.
Have a blessed Christmas.
Thank you, Annie. I pray you enjoy a blessed Christmas also!
I have been sharing quotes by Spurgeon this week! It is a God-incident that you have done this in your blog today. What blessed assurance in your prayer that He provides “comfort, encouragement, peace, joy, and more”. I, too, stand in awe of His great love for us as He demonstrated on the cross. Merry Christmas and God’s Blessings upon you, Steve, and your family.
It would appear we both love Spurgeon! Indeed, we stand in awe of our Lord’s love for us and the great lengths he went to in order to save us. Merry Christmas to you and your family, Cheri. Some of the family has gathered; the rest will join us the day after Christmas. It’s the best of times when we can all be together!
GOD WITH US!
A BLESSED CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR TO YOU AND STEVE
LOVE,JANET
Thank you, dear Janet. I pray you also enjoy a blessed Christmas!
Amen! The perspective from the lens of Charles Spurgeon always carries us forward to see the Gospel through our Father’s eyes.
As I said to Deb above, Spurgeon often expressed himself with such beautiful, poetic language. He ministers to my spirit with the content of his works, and with the artistry of his expression. It sounds like you’ve experienced the same. Merry Christmas to you and your family, BSB!
Love this. Especially, as I was only just reading in Hebrews of the connection between contentment (also translated as self-sufficiency through the infilling of Christ and the Holy Spirit) and the Promise that the Lord will never leave or forsake us. It’s all Jesus and His labor of love at work in us and through us. Amen. Thank you for your sweet encouragement in the LORD. May you and your family taste the riches of His mercy in a fresh way this Christmas, being showered in that same sweet encouragement you give us here.
Thank you, Anna, for your kind words. With you I praise Jesus for his work in us that provides all we need for contentment of soul! We’re enjoying the gathering of family this week; more will join us on Monday. The joy of family IS rejuvenating! Merry Christmas, Anna, to you and your family!
Beautiful blessing and words. Merry Christmas, friend Nancy!
Thank you, Jean. Merry Christmas to you, dear Jean, and your family!
God with us! How profound! And how often do I take that reality for granted in my life? This quote from Spurgeon was a powerful and needed reminder for me. Thank you, Nancy. And may you have a very Merry and Joyful Christmas!
Your comment is spot on. The reality of God with us is a profound reality when we consider who he is in contrast to who we are./ I love Spurgeon and the poetic way he expresses truth! / We did enjoy a glorious Christmas, thank you Patty. I pray you get to see your Christmas grand-baby SOON!
Lord willing, I should be holding that precious baby in one week.
FANTASTIC!
Hi Nancy,
The Word. Hey, is Immanuel a Greek word? So when John wrote about the Word becoming flesh and walked among us, it was this word. It’s God with us in every language. It takes three English words to say it and only one on Greek and Hebrew.
Thank you,
Gary
Thank you, Gary, for your insights. Immanuel is a Hebrew word (Isaiah 7:14). I think Emmanuel is the Greek spelling. “The Word” covers so much, doesn’t it? If no one has written a whole book on the attributes of this name, someone certainly could!
Such a glorious thought—God with us! Praise His holy name for His continual indwelling presence in my life. He has never meant more to me, and I have never loved Him more. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas, Nancy!
You are so right, Cheryl: just that one thought–God with us– is a supreme comfort and blessing, much less all his other attributes he lavishes upon us! We had a glorious Christmas, with the whole family gathered. Much conversation, cookie-baking, games, and laughter! I trust you were able to celebrate with loved ones also.
